This is the head shrine of the Sengen Shrines at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Its origins date back about 2000 years. It is said that in 27 BC, the land was devastated by repeated eruptions of Mt. Fuji, and the Fuji god was enshrined at Yamaashinochi (the foot of Mt. Fuji) in an attempt to calm the eruptions. In 806, Sakanoue no Tamuramaro built the shrine at its current location. On clear days, Mt. Fuji is reflected upside down in Kagamiike Pond. Wakutamaike Pond is made up of spring water from Mt. Fuji and is also a designated special natural monument.
